Darren Skelton

I was born in Waterford in the grand old year of 1980 (Sea Pigeon won the Champion Hurdle, Tied Cottage won the Gold cup but was banned for failing a drugs test). I’ve been following Horse Racing since Party Politics won the Grand National in 1992 (They voided the race the following year – I think they were trying to tell me something). My main interest lies with National Hunt racing as I believe it appeals to the masses a lot more than its money driven flat chested sister. My personal betting strategy is bet cleverly, and bet seldom. I tend to follow horses a lot and enjoy the game of trying to read trainer’s minds. I don’t like Maiden races as I don’t believe a horse can be trusted until it at least wins one race. I love women, but I hate any race that has the words Lady-Amateur Jockeys in the title, to me this is like being at your child’s sports day and having a bet on the egg and spoon race. If I was to give one piece of advice in this game it would be to listen to your inner voice. If he’s questioning you loudly for having a bet in a certain race, I’d listen, if he has a gut instinct about something, I’d listen – there are so many variables to consider in this game that I believe gut instinct should be up there with who’s riding the horse…
A couple of years ago I recruited some like minded friends and set up the gambling forum www.letsbet.ie It discusses all things related to gambling as well as many things that aren’t. Some of my closest friends are jockeys and I have a few trainer friends as well, I’ve learned through the years when I can listen to their advice and when I can’t. If there’s a day when the advice is gold, you can be sure you’ll read about it here on betting @ Betfair.
