New Bolton manager Owen Coyle
"I am expecting goals, Coyle to be hailed as the new savior; and no doubt a few shots of a certain Sol Campbell in the crowd. The latter being the shortest odds of the three!"
They don't come much tougher than this as an opening test for a new manager. Owen Coyle will have to start producing his magic from day one if his Bolton side are to get anything from their home game with high flying Arsenal.
The Gunners are one of the few sides who managed to get a game in during the big freeze but it was one they may wish to forget. Out-battled by an Everton side, they were fortunate to escape with a point. Bolton on the other hand haven't played since beating Lincoln in the FA Cup. That isn't ideal preparation but at least Coyle has had time to work with a fresh set of players.
Games involving a team with a new manager are notoriously tricky to predict. You have to assume that this group of Bolton players will up their game significantly in an attempt to impress the new gaffer. Arsenal, however, have not been beaten in the league since the drubbing by Chelsea in November and will provide a stern test for Coyle and his men.
Arsenal are currently trading at [1.58] in the match odds market, but for me they are just a little too short. I never thought I would say this but despite the return of Cesc Fabregas for this match I think the Gunners' midfield will miss the influence of Alex Song. It has been said that William Gallas is having his best spell for Arsenal at the moment but I think he should be thanking Song for that. With Song away at the African Cup of Nations the Arsenal defence might be a little vulnerable against a fired up Trotters outfit. With that in mind, at [1.58], Arsenal are a lay in the Match Odds market.
Talking of creaky defences you would hardly call Bolton's back line watertight. They concede two goals per game on average which looks particularly bad when you consider they are playing the team who have scored the most goals in the Premier League this season. I don't think Coyle can work his magic to such an extent that they can shut the Gunners out and I can definitely see goals in both teams. Which is fortunate because that fits the bill nicely for the ingredients in the Both Teams To Score market! You can back Yes in that market at odds of around [1.88].
Owen Coyle has a fit squad to pick from so it will be interesting to see who gets the nod. Strength in depth isn't exactly their forte so it will be pretty much the same players that Megson used. Trotters fans will be hoping that the problem was it was just a case of a change of style that is needed and not personnel. For now Coyle will have to make do with what he has got. Looking back at their results there is a good chance their confidence won't be as low as many may think. Sure, they are in the relegation zone but on the plus side they have only been beaten once in their last seven games.
We know Arsenal score goals and with top scorer Fabregas back I don't expect that to change in this game. It might not be enough to get the three points though and in any high scoring game there is some value to be had in the Correct Score market. There are a few tempting options but I think a small punt on 2-2 at odds of around [23.0] may reward.
I am expecting goals, Coyle to be hailed as the new savior; and no doubt a few shots of a certain Sol Campbell in the crowd. The latter being the shortest odds of the three!
My Recommended Bet: Both Teams to Score - Back Yes @ [1.88]
