Not to take away from Paul Nicholls' skill and undoubted good fortune but it would have been nice if these two horses came from different yards, I think it would have surely added even more passion to a Gold Cup race that's soaked with it already. Although, I suppose it would be fair to say that Kauto Star and Denman are owned, in almost equal measures, by different members of the public. If you've won more money on one than the other, then chances are you'll be sitting at different sides of the aisle at the Cheltenham Church come the big day, March 19th.

We'd be subjected (willingly!) to montage after montage of last year's Hennessy and King George, possibly to songs such as "Nobody does it better" by Carly Simon. It would actually be a guilty pleasure.
Kauto Star and Denman gave National Hunt Racing...no...Horse Racing full stop - two of its biggest ever days last year. Denman winning the Hennessy and Kauto winning the King George were two of the greatest performances I've seen from racehorses since I watched old videos of the great Arkle. All we need to do is universally pray they both make their big date in top shape because it has the potential to be the best Gold Cup of our lifetime.
There are other horses in this race too...best men and grooms men...Imperial Commander and What a Friend to name just two. But, if they win, it will mean that both of the stars either didn't show up or got stage fright. Anyway, we won't talk like that - they're both going to be there, primed for action. As Sky Sports might say, sit back and buckle up - you're in for one hell of a ride!
