Master Minded crashed thorough the last fence at Newbury but managed to recover and win the Totepool Game Spirit Chase on 13th February.
“As I'd said before, there's a lot to work on as we only started riding him again on January 6th. He'd done three half-speed bits of work and lots of steady work, so he's bound to improve on that and it will sharpen him up” – Paul Nicholls, trainer of Master Minded.
He may have blundered through the last fence at Newbury, but Betfair punters are keeping faith in Master Minded and the seven-year-old now trades at [1.92] on the exchange for the 2010 Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham.
Master Minded is now one of four so-called festival bankers with Kauto Star, Big Bucks and Dunguib also trading odds-on.
Following Newbury, his trainer Paul Nicholls told ATR that the gelding should continue to improve as the festival approaches:
"It was a pleasing effort because he jumped straight and he didn't hang...As I'd said before, there's a lot to work on as we only started riding him again on January 6th. He'd done three half-speed bits of work and lots of steady work, so he's bound to improve on that and it will sharpen him up."
Stablemate Twist Magic is vying for the second favourite spot with Kalahari King following success in the Victor Chandler Chase at Ascot and both horses continue to attract some support around [7.0].
The Colm Murphy trained Big Zeb represents the Irish and his price is back into [9.5] having previously taken a drift in the betting following a poor performance in the Tingle Creek at Sandown. He bounced back to form at Punchestown last-time-out but his form when travelling across the water is still a concern for punters and you can't be certain which horse will show up on the day.
The rest of the field are all priced above [25.0] for the feature event on St Patrick's Day.
