Pasco (left) will be a popular selection at Newbury (15:10)
"I wonder what price Turbo Island's stablemate Sa Suffit will be in Kelso's 15:35? Fairly short, I expect, but James Ewart has coaxed relentless improvement from this former headbanger and his chance at these weights is exceptional based on his impressive Wetherby handicap success off a mark of 144 last time."
I wonder about a lot of things nowadays.
I wonder whether Wigan Warriors have finally found the coach to take them back to the top of Super League in Michael Maguire and I wonder whether the rumour that he has bought the house next door but one to ours is true.
I wonder why a good few influential cats in racing seem to think the ubiquitous Jeremy Kyle can popularise the sport in the way he has mastered the art of getting nuts and sluts to tell all on national television.
And I also wonder just how stupid some bookies think punters must be given the style and substance of what they serve up in the guise of PR material nowadays.
But once these pressing concerns abate I usually start to wonder about what will happen in the best races of the day.
For example, I wonder whether Donald McCain's Overturn will relax well enough to finally fulfil his undoubted potential over hurdles in Doncaster's 13:45.
It can't be guaranteed, but Overturn certainly doesn't lack enthusiasm for jumping and considering he pulled much too hard for his own good until halfway at Doncaster last time he did very well to finish third behind Shadrack.
A hefty weight pull gives him every chance of taking revenge on that rival and the drying ground looks another plus for a horse who races off a lowly mark of 100 having won a decent race on the Flat off 88 not too long ago.
Secondly, I wonder whether King O'The Gypsies will continue to frustrate in Kelso's 14:30.
Howard Johnson's gelding will corner plenty of support after finishing placed at Market Rasen and Wetherby, but he hasn't always impressed off the bridle and it wouldn't come as a surprise if the tough and progressive Turbo Island gives him plenty to think about given the way his Ayr win has worked out.
Thirdly, I wonder what price Turbo Island's stablemate Sa Suffit will be in Kelso's 15:35?
Fairly short, I expect, but James Ewart has coaxed relentless improvement from this former headbanger and his chance at these weights is exceptional based on his impressive Wetherby handicap success off a mark of 144 last time.
Fourthly, I wonder how many punters will deplete their Cheltenham betting banks by going too aggressively at a couple of Newbury handicaps which promise to be very tough to solve.
The freewheeling Ellerslie George offers some back-to-lay potential against some exposed veterans in the 14:35, while course specialist Pasco and back-to-form Battlecry look the two with most to recommend them in a very open 15:10.
Lastly this week, I wonder just where to start with Doncaster's feature event at 15:25.
Possol, Cloudy Lane, Merigo and Iris de Balme all promise to have their say at various stages, but with only three places on offer in a fiercely competitive handicap it often pays to look for some value by laying a fancied contender for a place.
Wogan could be a suitable contender in this instance. Granted, he showed real exuberance when winning over three miles here on his latest start, but the combination of a 9lb hike and an extra two furlongs suggest that this ought to prove a much tougher assignment all round.
