Did I just do that? 53 year-old Steve Davis looks bemused after knocking out the defending champion John Higgins
"If Ding can get past Murphy, the draw looks as good as ever. With so many playing well, few could argue that if this wasn’t before, it has to now be the most open championship in many years."
''It's got be so much up there''. They were the words from Steve Davis after becoming the oldest man through to the Semi Finals for 27 years. Whilst plenty of acca backers were sweating with Neil Robertson's apparently insurmountable task at 11-5 down overnight, it was a 52 year old from Essex who ended up doing the damage.
At the time of writing (scribing Saturday night as I am taking on 26 miles of London's streets tomorrow) positions have been advised in each of Monday's games in previous articles. It seems a sensible time to look at the draw now things have opened up.
The week has seen some great stuff. A late night rollercoaster with King/Davis, valiant but unsuccessful comebacks from Wenbo and Greene, a 146 from Allen and a young man from Melbourne sinking Martin Gould and his [1.06] backers to boot.
So who is playing the best snooker? An incredibly hard question and one which I'm not sure I know the answer to. Graeme Dott looks a new man cueing superbly, both Ali Carter and Ding Junhui have been strong albeit against mediocre opposition and O'Sullivan is lurking menacingly - but yet to play fluently.
If Ding can get past Murphy, the draw looks as good as ever. With so many playing well, few could argue that if this wasn't before, it has to now be the most open championship in many years. My idea of the Quarter winners as stands - Robertson, Ding, Allen & O'Sullivan, for 1,2,3,4 respectively. Thereafter, it looks even harder to call, reflected in the outright betting with 5 players trading at single figure prices.
Unfortunately, it could be the end of the road for Dott at the Quarter Final stages, and if Ding meets and beats Robertson, perhaps we will see a replay of the infamous 2007 Masters Final between the man from China and O'Sullivan. Whatever happens, here's to another great week and I hope I get around the marathon in ultra quick time to tune back in to BBCi.
